Stop Making These 3 Common Lawn Mowing Mistakes

lawnmowing lawncare lawncaremistakes
Americans love their lawns. Year after year Americans are dumping billions of dollars and millions of hours into their lawns. However, most of us are making mowing mistakes. Big ones. Let’s talk about the 3 biggest lawn mowing mistakes americans are making in their lawns.
How high or low should you mow your lawn?
Maybe your neighbor gets away with cutting his lawn super short or you’ve seen all the amazing short cut lawns on YouTube and you think, gee I want that. I get it, but don’t do it unless you have a flat lawn, the right grass type, and the proper mower. Each type of cool season grass has a preferred height of cut. The fescues enjoy a height of cut at around 2.5 to 4 inches. Kentucky bluegrass likes being cut around 2.5 to 3 inches and perennial rye grass enjoys being cut shorter at 1.5 to 2.5 inches. If you have a mixed lawn or don’t know your lawns grass type, stick with 3 inches and you won’t go wrong.
Cutting the grass too low can damage the plants crown, stunt growth, cause yellowing, and invite disease into your lawn. Stick with the proper height of cut and never cut off more than 1/3 of the grass blade. Which leads us to number 2.
How often should you mow your lawn?
If you let your grass grow too long, you will be forced to have an ugly lawn because you’ll be frequently breaking the 1/3rd rule. Following this rule is a safe way to protect your grass from damage and disease. Let me show you an example in my yard. In the month of April, we moved a picnick table into the yard and I failed to mow the area for several weeks. Finally I cut off 5 inches of grass, overly exposed the crowns and damaged the grass. Now I’m left with a yellow, weak, and thinned out grass spot. Mowing at least once a week, twice if you can, will encourage your lawn to be lush thick and green.
What maintenance should I do on my lawn mower?
For a long time I bragged, my old snapped push mower started on the first pull. However, I failed to do any basic maintenance of my mower. I didn’t change the oil, I didn’t sharpen the blades, and I didn’t clean the build up of grass under my mowers deck. This resulted in a poor cut and lots of grass clumps in my yard. A poor cut which looks jagged and torn on a grass blade invites disease into your lawn and diminishes the quality of your grass. On top of that even if I was mowing regularly, I was getting clumps of grass all of over the place. 48 hours those clumps turn brown and smother your existing lawn. Thus killing the grass. These bare spots then invite unsightly weeds. Keeping a fresh sharp blade on your mower and keeping debris out from underneath your mower will improve your cut and reduce grass clippings from clumping up together.
While there is a near endless list of tips and tricks to improve your lawn. These 3 common mistakes will take your lawn to the next level. I can near guarantee that your lawn will significantly improve if you set your mower to mow at the right height of cut , mow your lawn frequently, and maintain your lawn mower.

Mow Your Lawn or Lose Your House!

Florida man may lose home because he didn’t cut his grass.

Jim Ficken left his home to take care of his recently deceased mother’s estate. While away, the man he paid to cut his lawn died. The grass in Ficken’s yard grew more than 10 inches long.
The city of Dunedin has an ordinance against long grass. City officials fined Ficken $500 a day. Over time the fines added up to almost $30,000.
\”I was shocked,\” Ficken tells John Stossel, \”It was just amazing that they would fine me that much.\”
Ficken doesn’t have $30,000, and now the city wants to foreclose on his home.
Ficken’s Lawyer, Ari Bargil of the Institute for Justice, points out that the city had other options: \”Hire a lawn service to come out and mow the grass, and send Jim a bill for 150 bucks, but they didn’t do that.\”
The reason, says Bargil, is that the city \”wants the money. Code enforcement is a major cash cow for the city.\”
Dunedin collected $34,000 in fines in 2007. Last year, the fines ballooned to $1.3 million. \”That’s an almost 4,000% increase,\” Bargil tells Stossel, adding the city attorney \”has called their code enforcement body a ‘welloiled machine.’\”
The city released a statement, saying they \”have come under recent unfair criticism.\” They argue that Ficken is a \”repeat offender\” and has a \”chronic history\” of not maintaining his property.
Stossel confronts Ficken, \”The town says you’re kind of a public nuisance.\” Ficken admits he is a \”bit of a slob\” but adds \”I got everything taken care of when they notified me.\”
Bargil argues Dunedin’s big fines violate the 8th Amendment. It not only protects us from cruel and unusual punishment but also from \”excessive fines.\”
Stossel agrees: what’s more excessive than politicians taking your home because you didn’t cut your grass?
